How Much Gravel Do You Need for a Driveway?

A gravel driveway needs about 4 inches of compacted stone. Multiply length × width in feet by 0.333, divide by 27 for cubic yards, then multiply by 1.35 for tons. A 50 × 12 ft driveway needs roughly 7.4 cubic yards, or 10 tons.
Gravel is the cheapest durable driveway surface, but only if you order the right depth and the right amount. Here is how the pros size it.
The formula
cubic yards = length × width × (depth in ÷ 12) ÷ 27
tons = cubic yards × 1.35
Crushed stone weighs about 100 lb/ft³, which works out to 1.35 tons per cubic yard. Denser #57 stone runs a little heavier.
Worked example: 50 × 12 ft driveway
At a 4-inch compacted depth:
- Area: 50 × 12 = 600 ft²
- Cubic feet: 600 × 0.333 = 200 ft³
- Cubic yards: 200 ÷ 27 = 7.4 yd³
- Tons: 7.4 × 1.35 = 10 tons

Depth by layer
A proper gravel driveway is built in layers, not one dump of pea gravel:

Total depth of 8–12 inches is typical for a driveway that carries vehicles without rutting. For a single decorative or walking path, 2–3 inches over landscape fabric is plenty.
Common mistakes
- Using pea gravel as a driving surface. It’s round and shifts under tires — great for paths, poor for driveways. Use angular crushed stone that locks together.
- Skipping compaction. Order about 20% extra to account for compaction, and rent a plate compactor for each layer.
- No edging. Without a border, gravel migrates into the lawn. Budget for edging.
