Topsoil Coverage Calculator

See how far a cubic yard of topsoil spreads at your chosen depth. One cubic yard covers about 108 ft² at 3 inches deep, or 324 ft² at 1 inch.

You need approximately
0.93 cubic yards
25 ft³ of topsoil
With 5% waste: 0.97 cubic yards (recommended when ordering)
Cubic feet
25 ft³
Weight
1 tons
40 lb bag (~0.75 ft³)s
34 bags

This view answers the reverse question: how far does a yard of topsoil actually spread? At 3 inches deep a cubic yard covers about 108 ft², so it's easy to under-order for a big lawn top-dress.

Why order extra? The headline number is the exact material your project needs. When you actually order, add about 5–10% on top — the “with 5% waste” figure in the result is a safe starting point. That margin covers what you lose to compaction, cuts around edges and corners, and ordinary spillage during handling. It is cheaper to have a little left over than to stop mid-job and wait on a second delivery.

Field notes

The 5–10% waste on topsoil isn't about spillage — it's settling. Freshly delivered screened soil fluffs up on the truck and loses roughly a tenth of its volume once it's spread and rained on. Rake to your finished grade, then add the loss back. If you're topping a lawn, cap the layer at ½ inch per pass so you don't smother the existing grass.

How the topsoil coverage calculator works

The math behind the tool:

cubic yards = (length ft × width ft × depth ft) ÷ 27

Frequently asked questions

How much topsoil do I need?

To find topsoil volume, multiply the area (length × width in feet) by the depth in feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards. A 4-inch layer over 100 ft² needs about 1.2 cubic yards.

How many bags of topsoil are in a cubic yard?

A cubic yard of topsoil equals about 36 bags of 40 lb topsoil, since each bag holds roughly 0.75 cubic feet and a cubic yard is 27 cubic feet.
